What Purchasing Professionals Can Learn by “Remembering the Ice”

As you know, it has always been my belief that purchasing professionals are more than the positions they hold in a company.  Like CIOs and CFOs, the artificially established historical boundaries associated with functional silos are becoming blurred.  This means that the traditional, and in retrospect narrow, definitions of one’s duties are ceding to a more holistic or enterprise-wide understanding of many operational areas that were previously off limits.

Included in this broader horizon, is the need to effectively communicate with what for many is a diverse group of internal, as well as external stakeholders.

In this regard, I have attempted to expand the limited view of procurement insight to include aspects of the corporate world in which many outside of the realms of purchasing have long been familiar.

This of course doesn’t mean ignoring the indigenous aspects of our profession.  What it does mean is that we are now viewing the world though a more enlightened lens that takes into account a bigger picture thereby enabling us to assume a more proactive place in the hierarchies of our respective organizations.

For this reason listening to my August 27th interview with author Bob Nicoll regarding his book “Remember the Ice and Other Paradigm Shifts,” will undoubtedly prove to be a worthwhile expenditure of your time.  Buying the book, and no I do not receive any form of commission, would also be a worthwhile investment.

That said I am pleased to share the following information on Bob as well as provide the link to Thursday’s PI Window on Business segment.

Bob Nicoll has a passion for linguistics and empowering word choice.  Since completing his Bachelors Degree in Psychology in 1972, and Masters in Counseling in 1974 he has focused his energies on studying the power of word choice: The Psychophysiology of Words.

The area of “customer service” is one that he is passionately focusing on. There needs to be a shift in understanding what is entailed in providing great customer service.  Bob shares, “In helping to shift the paradigm, I would suggest that the focus be on: ‘Providing exceptional service to your valued customers.’  When the focus is on the exceptional service, you will have more valued customers.”

His new book: Remember the Ice and Other Paradigm Shifts is becoming an international phenomenon with copies in more than 15 countries since its release in October 2008.
