Why AI success has little to do with technology, solution maps, and marketing

What is the success rate of AI implementation?

Sadly, beneath the aspirational headlines and the tantalizing potential lies a sobering reality: Most AI projects fail. Some estimates place the failure rate as high as 80%—almost double the rate of corporate IT project failures a decade ago. There are ways, however, to increase the odds of success. – Harvard Business Review (December 2023)

Since launching my Top 10 Solution Provider Analyst Map initiative earlier this year—once again, think Draft Kings for our industry—I have received messages from senior procurement execs who express their trust in my insights and advice.

Many of these messages are from people with whom my only interaction has been through LinkedIn posts and comments. In other words, I had never had any contact with them outside of the LinkedIn platform.

“Per the email below, the trust that practitioners have in me is why I am reluctant to hand over names and why I am getting involved more deeply with the sales process. Practitioner trust trumps features, functions, and benefits, solution map placement, magic quadrants, and PR case studies. To the C-Suite, all of those things are just noise that they do not have the time through which to sift.” – my email to A solution provider

This trust, built over the past few decades, is at the forefront of why and what I am doing with this Top 10 Analyst Map. I am in practice putting my name and reputation behind the solution providers on my map. In short, the solution providers’ success or failure in delivering expected and optimal value to practitioner clients is on me. Practitioner and Provider success or failure is now my success or failure.

Think of me as being the bacon or ham on your breakfast plate versus the eggs. Many of you will recognize this old analogy 😉

so, going forward, the question consultants and analysts need to ask themselves is this – am I prepared to put my name and reputation on the line for the logos I list?

It is something to think about.
