Boomer, Gen X, Millennial, Gen Z And The Agent-Based Model

Anyone who has followed me for any length of time knows that I have always believed that it is better to get it right than to be right.

This means that as much as I may challenge others, I also want to be challenged by others – including myself.

For the past several decades, I have been a strong advocate of using an agent-based development and implementation model for ProcureTech solutions. Here is the link to one of the many posts that explains my reasoning: Are you chasing solutions or solving problems? (Part 1 of 3)

However, I realized that my perspective on agent-based modeling is as a “Boomer.” I then wondered how subsequent generations would view the agent-based concept. In short, will Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z procurement professionals still view it as a viable model?

I asked ChatGPT the following question, and I received an unexpected answer: Which generation is more likely to use an agent-based model for ProcureTech implementations, Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, or Gen Z?

The likelihood of adopting an agent-based model for ProcureTech implementations varies across generations based on their familiarity with technology, risk tolerance, and openness to innovation. Here’s an analysis by generation:

1. Boomers

  • Likelihood: Low
    • Boomers tend to rely on traditional methods and proven strategies for technology implementations.
    • They are less likely to explore agent-based models, which involve decentralized decision-making and advanced simulations.
    • Preference for stability and risk-aversion makes them cautious about adopting emerging frameworks like agent-based models.

2. Gen X

  • Likelihood: Moderate
    • Gen X is pragmatic and open to technology if it aligns with business goals.
    • While they may explore agent-based models, they are likely to do so cautiously and only if there’s clear evidence of ROI or peer adoption.
    • Their focus is on balancing innovation with practicality, so they might adopt agent-based models selectively.

3. Millennials

  • Likelihood: High
    • Millennials are digital natives who embrace technology and innovation to drive efficiency and performance.
    • They are more likely to experiment with agent-based models, especially as these models align with their focus on data-driven decision-making and dynamic adaptability.
    • Their emphasis on sustainability and ethical sourcing may also drive interest in agent-based models for optimizing supplier ecosystems.

4. Gen Z

  • Likelihood: Very High
    • Gen Z professionals, born into a highly digital and AI-driven world, are most likely to adopt agent-based models.
    • Their comfort with advanced technologies, such as AI and machine learning, positions them as early adopters of decentralized and autonomous decision-making frameworks.
    • They value agility and real-time insights, both of which are core advantages of agent-based models.

Conclusion

  • Most Likely: Gen Z and Millennials are the generations most likely to use agent-based models for ProcureTech implementations due to their comfort with technology, openness to innovation, and focus on adaptability and data-driven decision-making.
  • Less Likely: Gen X may adopt agent-based models if they see clear evidence of benefits, while Boomers are the least likely to explore this approach, favoring more traditional implementation methods.

These generational tendencies reflect broader shifts in technology adoption and risk appetite within procurement and supply chain management.

MY TAKEAWAY:

I am glad I quit smoking 33 years ago—although I miss cigars. I started running at 59, eating right, and sleeping well at night because the most exciting years in our industry are about to happen. Thank you, Millennials and Gen Z procurement professionals!
