Here was my short answer:
That is an excellent question. I just spoke with someone yesterday who asked a similar question.
You don’t automate – or even think about automation with AI or any technology until after you identify and understand the problem. Remember this post and video: https://bit.ly/3FBnFRr.
Technology is the final piece – it is an enabler of the solution, not its definer. Another example of getting it right was Virginia’s eVA initiative.
As Don already knows, I have been in high-tech and procurement for more than 40 years, and the “building a hammer then looking for a nail” mindset has never worked, nor will it ever work. Unfortunately, it is a lesson that is not being learned, which is why the high rate of generational initiative failure continues today. Sadly, we may be having this same conversation 10 to 15 years from now, when we look back at today’s technology with the same dismissiveness we now reserve for 10GB hard drives and 2800 Mbps modems.
