EXCLUSIVE ROUNDTABLE: UK Government’s ‘crazy’ services expenditure – time to scrap and rethink?

This morning I had the opportunity to participate in a roundtable discussion pertaining to the just released review of UK Government Procurement by Sir Philip Green.

LONDON, October 14 2010 – The Shared Services & Outsourcing Network (SSON), the largest and most established community of over 35,000 shared services and outsourcing professionals, today announced the launch of an exclusive roundtable focusing on the speech David Cameron gave on Monday attacking the previous UK Government’s ‘Crazy’ services expenditure.

A review of government spending has highlighted some ‘crazy’ decisions on IT spending made by the Labour government, Prime Minister David Cameron has said. Referring to a review of certain areas of government spending, conducted by retail magnate Sir Philip Green, Cameron said that the previous government had “made crazy decisions about property, about IT, about shared services”. Sir Philip’s key recommendation is that there must be “a mandate for central procurement and a big improvement in the quality of procurement data, which are both shocking … inconsistent … and hard to get at”. That criticism has been repeatedly made by businessmen who have reviewed government procurement.

The PM’s attack was directed towards the inefficiency (or lack of) centralization of business services such as procurement which has resulted in the rogue spending.

Mark Hobayashi-Hillary, author and respected blogger, will be leading a 1 hour roundtable discussion on Monday 18th October at 1:00pm London time. The roundtable will delve into the root of the issue, potential solutions and how this will impact the forthcoming UK Government Spend Review.
