It is funny how anniversaries can sneak up on you. Especially when you have been doing something you love for so long.
A few moments ago, a message from WordPress just popped up on my screen reminding me that 9 years ago today I launched the Procurement Insights blog.
9 years! . . . where does the time go.
I have come a long way since that first post which was aptly, if not creatively, titled “Welcome to procurement Insights.”
Beyond talking about the high rate of e-procurement initiative failures, and the then recent announcement by SAP indicating that they will be introducing a 90-Day E-Sourcing Trial for only $10K, the following excerpt from that first post speaks volumes:
“Through this “filter” (the Procurement Insights Blog) of collaborative dissemination it is my hope that all participants come away with something meaningful to their particular situation or circumstance. Even if it is merely the ability to challenge one to think outside of the framework of ideas with which they are already most familiar.”
The ability to challenge the status quo, and to think outside of the framework of familiar thinking represented more than mere sentiments. It was my personal promise to you, my readers, that I wouldn’t back down from tackling the tough questions or covering the stories that others were reluctant to write about.
In other words . . . and yes I am a Trekkie . . . to boldly go where no blog has gone before!

I truly hope that I have delivered on that promise, and that you have found my writing to be interesting, thought-provoking, beneficial and yes, even a little entertaining.
All I can say now is thank you for reading and here is to another 9 years.

Dear Jon,
I’m sure you’ll be surprised to get a mail from far away Africa (Lagos – Nigeria) and from a non-procurement professional. I actually came across your blog by accident and since then have become addicted for two reasons:
1. You’re always hitting the nail on its head
2. You have a unique and refreshing writing style.
On your 9th anniversary, I only have one request, that you expand the horizon of your blog to cover procurement in Africa. There is a huge population waiting to benefit from your rich knowledge and experience.

I wouldn’t be blogging if it weren’t for you (people are welcome to give you the credit or blame for that, as they see fit) nor would I have a voice through Blog Talk Radio. You’ve been an amazing mentor, partner, and friend since I joined Buyers Meeting Point and “inherited you” in 2009. I’m sure I am not the only person that you’ve encouraged, supported, or cajoled into taking brave steps. That open attitude has allowed you to deliver on your promise directly through Procurement Insights as well as through the many people who stood up and spoke out because of your suggestions.

I’ve been having a not-so-great year so far. Self-pity has been SO much fun, but I think I want to try something different now. You are one who has inspired me. I am writing today for two reasons. First, I’d like to know if you can recommend a good site to get tips on blogging and how to get a readership. Erma Bombeck was another person who always inspired me. She found a way to turn misery into laughter, plus she died with dignity. Since I also enjoy doing research, I am hoping to combine your gift of highlighting issues that, perhaps some, would prefer to sweep under the rug, with a healthy dash of humor.
Secondly, I would like to make a small contribution to blog, or your fight with McDonald’s over your son. How do I go about doing this?

Thank you for the kind words Janis. I have never considered myself to be an inspiration, all I have tried to do is write about those things for which I have a great deal of passion and interest. Needless to say I am honored that my writing has in some small way touched you.
In terms of blogging, I am planning to release a video series on Udemy later this year that I am sure you would find helpful. In the interim, please check out the Udemy courses that are now available as they will likely prove to be most helpful.
As for McDonald’s – the case is currently in the hands of the police department. We hope that through their investigation, McDonald’s will finally step up and do what is right.
The Go Fund Me campaign relates to my response to a lawsuit regarding my coverage of a corporation in the industry – which included detailed information from company insiders. I of course stand by my sources, research and my coverage.
