I like DPW, but watching their new video and now reading your post above, Michael Lamoureux, my uneasy critique of the conference video brought to mind the following:
“In 2000, major companies such as IBM, Apple, and Compaq (now merged with Hewlett-Packard) decided to discontinue their involvement with COMDEX to allocate resources more efficiently, usually through their corporate events or other direct-to-consumer selling (Apple Stores), and the bursting of the dot-com bubble.”
The same excitement and buzz that existed for COMDEX – and yes, I remember when it started, now surrounds DPW. I can see a similar track taking shape between the two.
For example, both were ignited by technology awakenings, e.g., the PC for Comdex and AI for DPW. Today, DPW is facing an AI bubble burst in 2025, like COMDEX had to face the dot com bubble burst in 2000.
Watching the DPW video “How can leaders achieve the exponential impact of AI,” it is as if AI is a “silver bullet” solution to all that ails the procurement world. In short, everyone is excitedly talking about AI’s promise, ignoring that 80% of all AI initiatives fail).
AI is exciting, as exciting as the PC before it. However, trumpeting AI while ignoring the high rate of initiative failures and the growing number of solution providers abandoning their AI strategies cannot be overlooked.
Doing so is similar to passengers of the Titanic debating what to have for dinner after the ship hit the iceberg.
Instead of talking about AI’s unbridled possibilities, why not do a video on why AI initiatives are failing – by the way, a recent post by Kearney put the AI failure rate at 83%, and do a video on why initiatives fail and what we need to do to solve the problems with AI implementations.
The tie-in to your above post, Michael Lamoureux, is an Orbis talking about the current landscape and not mentioning the possibility of an unseen cliff beyond the next horizon.
DPW needs to decide whether it is solely a conference to promote AI technology providers or a conference that promotes unbiased knowledge of AI’s possibilities AND challenges.
Scoutbee – The DPW 2023 conference (link in comments) is just around the corner (October 11 – 12), and as this is our flagship event, you bet we’ll be pulling out all the stops! Where do we even start⁉
Tealbook – The most influential tech event in procurement is around the corner – Are you attending DPW?
By the way, I have written about Tealbook and Scoutbee favorably in this blog. Type in either company’s name in the Search box to access their respective archives.

If you look at their 2024 sponsors list, what do you think, e.g., the challenges part of the equation? – https://conference.dpw.ai/about/sponsors-2024/
A Final Thought:
Where are these past sponsors:

Last year, our CEO Stephany Lapierre shared the stage with Tim Herrod, FCPA, FCA from Albemarle Corporation and Kearney’s Dr. Elouise Epstein 🏳️⚧️ to discuss why trusted supplier data should be top of mind for your digital transformation.
