Is another Solution Map Star falling?

The following is a message I wrote to someone in our industry for whom I have great respect.

I will not provide specific details because of respect for this individual and the solution provider they worked with. But I will say that this was a needless occurrence brought on by the fear of getting left behind in the GenAI “Hype Cycle.” A cycle in which solution providers were given little choice but to proclaim “we are now a GenAI company” in much the same way that Ariba claimed that it was an “on-demand company” in 2007 in one of this blog’s most read posts “The Ariba Interviews.”

One of the benefits (and sometimes downsides) of being one of a handful of men and women in our industry who have been around for a while is that the old saying about history repeating itself always seems to stand the test of time.

The 2007 Ariba interviews article focused on how the company was “reengineering the future of on-demand.” I find it funny that engineering or reengineering technology is seemingly a part of every hype cycle.

Anyway, these are the words I offered this respected procurement executive:

I respect what you do, and even more so now.

75% of the logos on the solution maps will be gone by the end of 2025.

I think your company is in the same position as another that abandoned its GenAI strategy a few months ago and laid off its entire marketing team, including the VP.

Meanwhile, people like Stephany Lapierre had the courage to say, “Wait a second. We have to change direction, or there is no future,” and took another track. They are doing much better now! I hope to see great things for them down the road as a GenAI operating system.

Once again, all the best in your new position. Please stay in touch.

Best,

Jon

It is no secret that there has been a growing disappointment in an increasing number of “GenAI” demos lately. The issue is that there is no substantive “Wow factor” because the expected AI has turned out to be little more than a ChatGPT adjunct with pedestrian use of self-learning algorithms.

As more solution providers fall by the wayside, the focus of practitioners must shift to the expertise of the people behind the technology and which of the two categories – AI operating system or ProcureTech front-end solutions their offering falls. Perhaps we are entering the period of scalable ProcureTech apps?
