Today’s post is inspired by a LinkedIn post by Nico Bac, which asks the question: Why is Ariba still around?
Here was my response to his question – what would be your response?
What great memories, Nico Bac! One of the very first posts I wrote for the Procurement Insights blog was in August 2007 – https://bit.ly/3K7bQW3
I was contacted by the PR firm asking to arrange a “monitored” interview with one of SAP Ariba‘s senior execs about an exciting new contract and how they would “re-engineer” the future of on-demand.
As a side note, the interview and the subsequent release of the “Ariba For Dummies” book were two of those times that Jason Busch and I were 100% in sync.
Of course, I was familiar with Ariba in the mid- to late 1990s (1996), which means I have an extensive archive of articles and podcast interviews from 25 years. I especially remember interviews with their then-CMO, Tim Minahan, and their CFO, Ahmed Rubaie.
As for your question, everything you could want to know about Ariba between 2005 and 2025 – including why they are still in business- can be accessed through my blog’s archives: https://procureinsights.com/?s=Ariba.
I know hindsight is 20/20, but in 2016, given Ariba’s challenges regarding successful implementations, what were the compelling reasons you chose them as a ProcureTech solution partner?

Given the success of the 2010 Ariba For Dummies book, should there be a similar version for today’s AI?
