Why – in the digital age, is onboarding suppliers still a problem?

TealBook‘s Stephany Lapierre shared the following stat at the last SIG | ORG (Sourcing Industry Group) Global Executive Summit: “On average, it takes organizations 21 days to validate and onboard suppliers, with 81% of executives indicating that despite the effort, they are only partially confident in their supplier data.”

In the meantime, here is what I think: Unlike years past when accessing data, onboarding, engaging and managing suppliers in “real-time” was not only an onerous task, but virtually impossible, today’s digital technology with an intuitive user interface has removed the past barriers. In short, proactive, real-time engagement capability is readily available.

Why are so many CPOs disappointed with their digital transformation strategies and must take a “reactive crisis-based” approach to engage and manage their suppliers successfully?

Is it a people, process, or technology issue (or a combination of all three)?
