(Be honest) You don’t know anyone in the room.
Questions start racing through your mind: Do I look presentable? How do I introduce myself? What if they don’t like me? What ifโฆ
Your anxiety grows.
Your heart rate accelerates.
Your fear intensifies.
It’s hashtag#uncomfortable. Everything looks so unfamiliar.
I’ve been there many times, and I know it’s not a pleasant feeling.
Change is not easy! It’s inherently uncomfortable.

Here is my response to Jose’s terrific post. What would you say about the difficulty of change?
I use the following formula for change:
Curiosity + Courage = Change (or the willingness to change)
A long time ago, I realized the following:
1. Curiosity to step outside of yourself to see others and the situations around you. You will find that the strangers sitting in the conference room are generally more nervous about meeting you than you are about meeting them. This recognition is one of the reasons why, when I am in front of an audience of 30 or 3,000, I like to go right out in the crowd to engage them in my lectures and presentations.
2. Courage to challenge existing beliefs and situations. I remember being a young boy, 7, and my older brother telling me a monster was in the closet. For some time, I would run by the closed closet door, fearful that the “monster” would reach out and grab me. Then, one day, I thought to myself this is silly. I entered the closet, closed the door, and dared the monster to get me. I sat there in the dark amongst the coats for what seemed like an eternity. Guess what – no monster ๐
