KFC, Coca-Cola and GenAI Secret Recipes?

I have yet to see a demo of anyone’s procurement GenAI platform that has surprised me or led to some revolutionary breakthroughs that have left me in awe. Don’t get me wrong, in my quest to find the handful of solution providers who get it, a few have really impressed me because they understand agent-based modeling and their potential for revolutionizing our industry with effective simplicity (versus hype cycle marketing content and graphics that are more confusing than revealing to many end-user clients.)

The real breakthrough with today’s GenAI tech is that it isn’t a secret recipe because it uses the AI that has existed for some time as its foundation. The real differentiator is whether a solution provider understands and acknowledges that while technology has a role to play, it is the people behind the technology who possess the understanding of our industry that influence successful outcomes. In short, they lead with experience and expertise rather than buzzwords, making the path to success understandable. That is the “not-so-secret” recipe for leveraging technology in the past, present, and future.

Finding The “Real Thing”

Take the time to watch this video of an assessment I recently did of a solution provider’s platform FOR Procurement solution providers. The same interview framework and questions should be part of your assessment process regardless of industry because it focuses not on the technology but on the effective use of an agent-based model. (NOTE: The assessment/demo begins at the 2:54 mark)

What Is An Agent-Based Model

I am often asked what I think about the “evergreen” evolution of high-tech computing. My answer has always been the same – it’s not about the technology but the problems the technology solves. In other words, as great as the tech may be, it means nothing if it doesn’t come after people and process understanding.

When organizations make the mistake of leading with technology, they are bending their people and processes around an equation-based model approach in which the tech is the driver for success.

When you lead with people and process understanding – an agent-based model, technology moves from a functional driver to a problem-solving tool that streamlines and delivers efficiencies and tangible results.

Your Takeaway

The successful utilization of an AI-based solution comes down to the following three critical factors or steps:

  1. Defining the problem you want to solve and your solution’s impact on internal and external stakeholders (Agents).
  2. Determining if there is a relationship alignment between provider and practitioner – No matter what the Hype Cycles claim, there is no such thing as a plug-and-play, hands-free implementation. In short, you need to communicate and collaborate beyond the technology. Even the most incredible technology will not help you if that isn’t present.
  3. Never, ever lead with technology. Technology is not your solution, and it doesn’t define processes. Technology is an enable and an accelerator when implemented using an agent-based model. SIDE NOTE: Don’t fall for the 5X or 10X proclamations. Without following the guidelines above, you will be fortunate to get 1X – if that.)

PS The recipes that are still a secret are the Coke and KFC recipes. In this regard, I can’t help you! 😉
