Whenever I am asked “about the “evergreen” evolution of high-tech computing, my answer has always been the same – it’s not about the technology but the problems the technology solves. In other words, as great as the tech may be, it means nothing if it doesn’t come after people and process understanding.

When organizations make the mistake of leading with technology, they are bending their people and processes around an equation-based model approach in which the tech is the driver for success.

When you lead with people and process understanding – an agent-based model, technology moves from a functional driver to a problem-solving tool that streamlines and delivers efficiencies and tangible results.”

While the above graphic is descriptive, what undermines its message is the continuing insistence on using a tech-led equation-based model versus an agent-based model. If you fail to recognize this, we will still be talking about initiative failure 10 years from now.

The Lance Younger Video

The issue with the McKinsey Graphic is that it is similar to Lance Younger’s video below.

I encourage you to watch the entire 30-minute video but zero in on the 3:46 to 6:57 segment of Lance’s presentation.

Based on what he is saying in this excerpt, there are elements with which we are not too far apart from a conceptual standpoint. However, he only touches on the periphery of people and processes and limits the stakeholder involvement beyond the procurement department to supplier engagement. For the rest of the discussion, he veers off to the technology part of the equation, referencing solution maps. At that point, Lance makes the subtle yet fatal mistake, increasing our risk of falling into the equation-based development and implementation doom loop that will see us waste technological advancement versus capitalizing on it.

The Agent-Based Model

Now, rewatch the 13-minute video below focusing on the following two things:

  1. While on the periphery of the right track, Lance ultimately spends too much time on the technology path, with intermittent side detours into the people and process influence and impact. In other words, from 3:46 to 6:57, it is a critical stage that is ultimately brushed over.
  2. Before technology is introduced, more time must be spent on the Agent-based development and engagement model.

Technology doesn’t drive efficiency; it is an enabler of efficiency that should be the last piece of the puzzle, not the first.
