In the above excerpt from an email, I received from Procurious regarding the release of their new The Gen NEXT report, it seems to express some surprise at the findings from a global survey of 500+ procurement professionals.

While there is no doubt that the report is interesting and definitely worth reading, surprise or disbelief are not words that I would use to describe some of the findings.

For example, the fact that more than two-thirds of procurement professionals are unclear about their future career plans and intend to change their roles within the next two-years was something I wrote about in November 2015.

In the 2015 post; Would 50% of all procurement professionals really choose a different career?, I talked about two surveys that I took at a conference in which 50-percent of those procurement professionals in attendance indicated that if they had to do it all over again, they would not have chosen procurement as their profession.

What was surprising – at least to me, was the fact that these respondents were made up of both long-time professionals, as well as millennials. One would think that the latter would be the ones injecting new energy and excitement into the profession as opposed to contemplating a career-choice mistake.

The real question is why the up and coming generation who, unlike their earlier predecessors, chose procurement has a career have become disillusioned by it?

Regarding the assertion that more than half of procurement professionals do not trust their bosses regarding their career progression, this is actually better than the results from a January 2017 Forbes article which found that sixty-three percent of all employees do not “trust their leaders” at all. The net-net, of course, is simply this, get the Procurious report as well as access as much information as you can from other resources. There is indeed a major transformation taking place in our industry, and you do not want to be one of the forty-seven percent of procurement people who will be deemed expendable in the coming years.
