EDITOR’S NOTE: Today’s post is inspired by a 1:46 #DPWNYC video titled “How Can Leaders Achieve The Exponential Impact of AI.”
I will start by sincerely apologizing for what I am about to write, but I watched this video multiple times, and it didn’t say anything new. As much as I wanted to like it, it was like a “be all you can be” promo video for AI. In short, I understand why the video was made; I just don’t know WHY it was made.
Of course, there were a few good soundbites, but the one statement that stood out was the gentleman’s suggestion to find out what is and is not real with AI. We will use that as a starting point.
Here is an excerpt from a current discussion stream regarding AI and tail spend:
“NOTE: You don’t need to get the latest and greatest tail spend technology—it is not a technology issue. The tech to address tail spend effectively has been around for decades, so there is no need to reinvent the wheel.”
I invite you to join the ongoing LinkedIn discussion on this topic. Your insights and perspectives will add value to a much-needed discussion. https://bit.ly/4fvYZe5
AI Relevancy?
- Technology is irrelevant
- AI is irrelevant
Over the past few decades, 80% of all “technology-centric” initiatives have failed, from the early days of ERP to SaaS, digital transformation, and AI. The 80% failure rate is what is relevant!
By the way, it isn’t the technology’s fault; the tech is great! It’s our continuing and perplexing practice of making technology the focal point of what we want to accomplish.
As an industry, we need to learn more about agent-based modeling versus equation-based modeling; otherwise, we will have this same discussion 10 to 15 years from now. (In 10 to 15 years, we will look at today’s AI technology with the same dismissive attitude we now have towards floppy drives, 2800bpms modems, and dot matrix printers.)
Don’t let technology do your work; use it to empower your work!

If AI is the key to supply chain success, why are we headed for a 2000-type AI Bubble Burst in 2025?
