When should you walk away from a solution provider’s platform?

Here is the short answer – which one has the best Data Intelligence Operating System, or as I call it, DIOS?

What is DIOS and Why Is It Important?

Over the past few months—and more so the past couple of weeks—I have received several inquiries regarding my work with self-learning algorithms in the late 1990s—early 2000s. I love these conversations because they allow me to understand better how to possibly create a scalable model that can reverse the high rate of initiative failures that have plagued our industry for decades.

Remember, I am talking about ProcureTech only at this point because that is my primary area of focus.

Before I explain what DIOS is, it is a good idea to tell you why you should care and why it is an indicator of a solution provider’s ability to implement their platform successfully.

First, your solution provider may not have created the core data brain or operating system behind their technology. Think of it this way, while a spreadsheet may be a great tool, would you be able to use it without an operating system?

“Without an operating system, a computer is useless.” – General Research

Today’s heralded, voraciously data-hungry AI or GenAI procurement solution platforms are no different. Without a Data Intelligence Operating System “DIOS,” the new and exciting solutions are more dreams than reality.

So, here is the question: When you talk with a solution provider, do you know what DIOS their platform is based on, and do they know how to build an operational dashboard that links your required, practical-use frontline capabilities with said operating system?

Right off the bat, if they cannot answer that question, it is a red flag. Let’s face it: why are an increasing number of solution providers quietly walking back from their AI strategies and returning to their previous solution platform? Why will 75% of solution providers disappear from the map by the end of 2025?

Using our computer operating system reference, not everyone can develop an Excel spreadsheet—or, in this case, a functional and intuitive procurement solution dashboard. As a result, you have to sift out the Lotus 123s from the Excels. In short, you must understand how they use their DIOS to build their dashboard. If an answer isn’t readily available, walk away because nothing they say after that matters.

Of course, some solution providers will suggest, “DIOS—we don’t need no DIOS!” They might even suggest they build their own—which I have to admit is possible. But just because someone builds a rocket in their garage doesn’t mean I am going to get into it and travel to the moon—i.e., it’s a moonshot.

Today’s Takeaway: the first question you should ask a solution provider is what DIOS they use.
