The AI Bubble Burst – Big Bang Or A Thousand Cuts?

AI probably won’t crash and burn as sensationally as the dot.com bubble. I already had similar thoughts around blockchain and in the end the solutions vanished quitely and selected good ones remained. AI will be a similar story. – Ulf Venne, Everstream Analytics (August 23, 2024)

Ulf Venne, I agree, but this time around, the impact will be concentrated on procurement and supply chains, which touch all areas of our lives. I remember that in the early days of the pandemic, the NHL was afraid that it would run out of hockey sticks with the closure of manufacturing facilities overseas.

Therefore, it will likely be death by a thousand cuts rather than the swift explosion experienced with dot.com. By the way, the aftershocks of the dot.com bust were felt for several years after the main event itself. Think of it in the context of not a single burst of a balloon but a much slower leak with a more significant hangover period.

With companies like Microsoft abandoning their Diversity Initiative, what impact will it have on that program and ESG programs?

So, while this burst will be less explosive – a big bang- it will run deeper with longer aftershocks.

Of course, all bets are off if the rumblings of another global pandemic turn out to be true – e.g., Monkeypox.
