Michael Lamoureux – Digital Procurement Transformation Requires Strategy and Design!

NOT just new technology! (As Jon W. Hansen would say, an agent-first approach, not an equation-first approach.)

It also needs more than just a cultural shift to integrate a digital gold thread that aligns the organization’s overarching commercial vision and enterprise-wide digital ecosystem.Β It needs a 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐑𝐧𝐨π₯𝐨𝐠𝐒𝐜𝐚π₯ 𝐬𝐑𝐒𝐟𝐭 that goes from looking at technology as a saviour to one that sees technology for what it always was — just a tool, and a tool that only works if:

* properly selected,
* properly used, and
* placed in the hands of an appropriately educated, 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐒𝐧𝐞𝐝, and skilled individual.

Nico Bac – πŸ’― %!!

JWHβ€”Nico Bac,Β demos demonstrating tech functionality have a role but are not really relevant because the solution provider presents a “production environment” platform without providing the deep logic behind it. In short, I want to see the provider’s problem-solving capabilities using an agent-based model before I see the snapshot of the final product.

What Is The Best Demo?

Too many solution providers are “selling it first and worrying about making it work later.” This approach is driven by fear of missing out or being left behind. So, what we are really seeing is a glossy presentation of an idea or vision with very little substance behind it.

It is a great approach for raising money and creating “hype cycles,” but it is not so great for delivering timely outcomes for practitioner clients.

Here is what I consider to be the best demo format:

  • A pure versus PR/Marketing filtered presentation
  • An interactive two-way conversation
  • Proof that the solution provider used an agent-based, problem-solving model
  • A presentation that not only showcases the highlights but recognizes that the platform is not a turn-key, off-the-shelf application. In short, the practitioner will have some work to do
  • The willingness to have the session recorded

The following video of the Forestreet solution demonstrates the attributes highlighted above. Pay particular attention to two significant statements made by the solution provider: that they are wide open to having the session recorded and acknowledge that they are a technology company and require input from procurement experts.
