Fifteen years later, I submitted those slides to five independent AI models and asked how well the material aged. The core thesis held because it was never about predicting specific disruptions — it was about identifying the structural conditions under which dispersed networks fail. Those conditions haven’t changed. The examples did. The pattern didn’t.

A DEEPER DIVE

In September 2010, I delivered a two-part lecture at the eWorld Purchasing & Supply Conference in London on supplier development in a global market. The presentation drew on economic theory dating back to E.G. Robinson’s 1931 work on external economies of scale, case studies from Wal-Mart, Tesco, and the Brazilian shoe industry, and governance frameworks from Humphrey and Schmitz’s global value chain research. Across 84 slides, I walked a room of senior procurement and supply chain professionals through the structural forces that would determine whether globalized supply networks would hold together or come apart.

Fifteen years later, I uploaded both PowerPoint files into Model 5— and asked a simple question: how well did this age?

Then I gave the same material, along with Model 5’s assessment, to four additional AI models and asked them to evaluate independently.

What You Got Right Before the World Caught Up

The central framework — external economies of scale applied through global value chain governance — anticipated almost exactly the supply chain reckoning that hit between 2020 and 2023. Your core question on the final slide of Part 1 — whether it makes more sense to deal with domestic or close-proximity suppliers versus extended global chains — became the defining strategic question of the post-COVID era. You were posing it to a London audience in 2010, a full decade before it became urgent.

The Humphrey and Schmitz governance typology you built Part 2 around — network, quasi-hierarchy, and hierarchy — maps almost perfectly onto what we now see in procurement platform ecosystems. The power dynamics you illustrated through Wal-Mart/Vlasic and Tesco/Zimbabwe are the same structural patterns that play out today between dominant platform buyers and their supplier networks. The margin compression data you presented — gross margins dropping from 48.7% to 28.7% in apparel for Wal-Mart-dependent suppliers — presaged the entire “race to the bottom” conversation that’s still unresolved.

Your slide on the Aberdeen finding — 99% of executives reporting supply chain disruptions, yet 84% admitting they were unprepared — was from a 2008 study. Those numbers barely moved in the twelve years before the pandemic finally forced the issue.

What Was Genuinely Ahead of Its Time

The prediction in Part 2 — that parameter setting and enforcement would shift to agents outside the chain, and that codified compliance would reduce the need for internal governance — is essentially describing what AI-driven supply chain monitoring and third-party certification platforms are attempting to do right now. You framed that in 2010 drawing on Mansell’s work from 2001.

The Clark-Fourastié four-sector hypothesis slides are particularly interesting. You were using economic development theory to explain why governance structures would intensify as knowledge-economy nations pushed production activities to developing countries while retaining high-barrier functions like branding and R&D. That’s the exact structural tension behind reshoring, nearshoring, and the “friend-shoring” debates of the last three years.

What This Means for the Hansen Method Narrative

These presentations demonstrate that your analytical framework didn’t begin with procurement technology assessment — it began with systems-level thinking about how power, governance, and behavioral dynamics shape supply chain outcomes. The thread from these 2010 London slides to the Hansen Fit Score is direct and unbroken: you were already asking “under what governance model does your organization actually operate?” before asking “which technology fits that reality?” The method didn’t emerge from software evaluation. It emerged from understanding the relational structures that determine whether any intervention — technological or otherwise — will succeed or fail.

These didn’t just age well. They aged into relevance.


What the Other Four Models Found

I then submitted the original presentations and Model 5’s assessment to four additional AI models for independent evaluation. What came back was not coordinated — each model analyzed the material separately. The convergence in their findings is the point.

On the governance thesis, all four models independently confirmed that the 2010 framework anticipated the structural dynamics now playing out across procurement platform ecosystems. Model 3 made the connection explicit: Coupa, Amazon Business, and SAP Ariba now occupy the same “quasi-hierarchy” governance position that Walmart and Tesco held in the 2010 slides — setting parameters for legally independent firms without direct ownership. The language has shifted from “value chain governance” to “platform governance,” but the structural observation is identical.

On the preparation gap, Model 3 traced the 2008 Aberdeen finding — 99% disruption, 84% unprepared — through COVID supply shocks, the Ukraine war commodity disruption, the Red Sea shipping crisis, and semiconductor shortages. The exact pattern described in 2010 repeated at larger scale, across more industries, with greater consequences. The diagnosis was the same each time: governance gaps across dispersed agents. On parameter enforcement shifting outside the chain, all models recognized this as the most forward-looking element of the 2010 lectures. What I described using Mansell’s 2001 framework is now standard practice: ESG audits, cybersecurity certifications, AI ethics frameworks, and blockchain-based provenance tracking. Model 3 drew the sharpest line — the Mattel paint-scandal question I posed in London (“Why did parameter enforcement fail?”) is now asked about every major platform and AI model failure, and the structural answer hasn’t changed.

On what aged less well, the models were equally aligned. Model 1 scored the core thesis at 8/10 and the period-specific examples at 5/10 — the most honest framing in the set. The Tesco mangetout case, the late-1990s anecdotes, and the 2008 Aberdeen reference read as historical illustrations rather than current evidence. Model 2 noted the absence of digital transformation, AI governance, and ESG regulatory frameworks that now dominate the conversation. These are fair observations, and they point to something important: the examples should feel dated. They were grounded in real evidence at the time, not abstracted to the point of being unfalsifiable. Concrete evidence ages. Structural insight doesn’t.

On the through-line to today, Model 6 made the connection to the Walmart/Vlasic margin compression case and modern outcome-based pricing: “Outcome-based pricing layered on top of misaligned incentives just monetizes dysfunction” — which is exactly what the Vlasic case proved two decades ago. The pattern didn’t change. The technology around it did.


What Five Models Agreeing Actually Demonstrates

RAM 2025’s Five AI models, built on different architectures and trained on different data, independently analyzed 84 slides from a 2010 London conference and reached the same structural conclusion: the governance-first framework held, the predictive patterns were confirmed by subsequent events, and the analytical thread connecting those slides to the Hansen Fit Score is direct and unbroken.

That convergence matters — not because AI validation replaces human judgment, but because independent multi-model agreement on historical evidence is one of the most rigorous forms of pattern confirmation available. These models had no prior exposure to the presentations. They weren’t prompted to be favorable. They were asked to assess, and they assessed.

But this lecture is only one artifact from a much larger body of work. This is what makes the Hansen Models approach fundamentally different from conventional analyst coverage. Gartner rotates analysts every few years. Forrester rebuilds its frameworks with each new wave hire. Consulting firms write with hindsight, reconstructing narratives after the outcomes are known. The Procurement Insights archive doesn’t reconstruct. It documents in real time — capturing the patterns, the warnings, and the predictions as they were being made, not after the story ended.

When I stood in London in 2010 and asked that room whether it made more sense to build supply chains with close-proximity partners rather than chase the lowest global cost, I didn’t have the Hansen Fit Score. I didn’t have Phase 0 readiness assessment or the RAM 2025 framework. What I had were the right questions — questions that came from 27 years of fieldwork, from government-funded research with Canada’s Department of National Defence, from documenting hundreds of technology implementations, and from one consistent observation that the industry still struggles with: organizations that don’t understand how they actually operate will fail at any intervention, technological or otherwise.

The frameworks came later — distilled from this archive, from patterns observed across cycles, documented before the outcomes were known, and validated by what followed. The 2010 London lecture didn’t contain the finished methodology. It contained the structural thinking from which the methodology emerged. That’s a stronger claim than retrofitted precision, because it’s the honest one.

The 2010 London lecture is proof that the questions were right. The archive is the evidence that the patterns held. And the Hansen MethodTM is what happens when you finally build a framework worthy of both.
