The email arrived at 5:13 this morning.
I have been awarded Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply, and I am now entitled to use the designatory letters FCIPS.
I want to say something about that, and then get back to work.
Fellowship is the highest grade of membership CIPS confers. It is not applied for in the ordinary way and it is not bought. It is awarded on the basis of a record, and the record in this case is one many of you have been reading for a long time.
I did not go looking for this. CIPS came to me.
Some of you have been here since 2007. A few of you longer than that — since the seminars, the accredited programmes, the conference keynotes, back when I was arguing that technology was the last piece of the puzzle rather than the first and the room was not especially receptive.
You are the reason this happened. Not in a sentimental sense. In a literal one. The archive is 3,600 posts across nineteen years with zero vendor sponsorships, and the only thing that kept it going through the stretches when nobody was reading was that some of you were. Every comment, every argument, every email telling me I had got something wrong — that is what an evidentiary record is made of.
A chartered institute founded on professional standards looked at nineteen years of unsponsored publishing and decided it counted.
That says more about what CIPS chose to recognize than it does about me.
I have also accepted a seat on the CIPS Americas board, so there is still much to do in the coming weeks, months, and years. I will write about that separately.
Nothing about the work changes.
