There are, at present many interesting debates in the procurement world.
Between digital transformation and job displacement to the redefinition of what procurement means in a global supply chain, it is hard to believe that we are still talking about spreadsheets.
Don’t get me wrong; I am not anti-spreadsheet. When I entered the high-tech world more than 35 years ago, the spreadsheet – and in particular, Visicalc was the driving force in transforming the personal computer from novelty items or “passing” fad to an essential tool in the modern business world.
However, and like a guest who overstays their welcome, in the emerging digital age, the persistent and pervasive use of spreadsheets is an impediment to procurement’s future from both a strategic and creditability standpoint. Such self-imposition is bad for the profession and the career arc of most professionals.
Now that this is out of the way, spreadsheets do have limited usefulness.
