In another example of a picture being worth a thousand words, in the past, my children have asked me to explain what procurement and supply chains do beyond a conceptual basis. In short, they know it is about moving stuff from one point to another, but what does it really mean to them.
Because chance favors the prepared mind, I was able to snap the following picture.
As soon as I showed them the picture, the light bulbs went off. For the youngest one, it means that he gets ice cream. For the rest of us, it means that nothing happens in our everyday lives that isn’t somehow touched by procurement and supply chains.
Do you have a supply chain pic to share?

Next time I have a McDonalds ice cream I will send a picture. Very complex supply chain. Try mapping it. From how many different countries do the different ingredients come – as there use usually additives. Each ingredient has its own complex supply chain. How many king meds and routes of transportation are there? Ok, there will be some ‘artisan’ real cream ice creams made on the farm. However, the cattle that produce the milk plus all the industrial machinery have their own supply chains.

The complexity of our supply chains is amazing, Colin – simply amazing!
