The AI era has recreated the same structural gap — with higher stakes.
Technology capability is accelerating faster than at any point since the ERP era. Agentic AI, procurement automation, decision intelligence platforms — the vendor landscape is moving at a pace boards cannot track independently.
And yet one number has remained stubbornly constant across three decades of enterprise technology adoption:
60 to 85 percent of transformation initiatives fail.
That contradiction creates the central question of the AI moment:
If the technology keeps improving, why don’t the outcomes?

The lesson was not about SAP alone. It was that implementation credibility can collapse overnight when a firm sells confidence it has not demonstrated on itself. That dynamic has not changed. The vendors have. The consultants have. The price tags have. The pattern has not.
The archive documented that question in 2008. The AI industry is living the answer in 2026.

There is one important difference.
Gartner ultimately became a vendor evaluation firm. The question it answers — which vendor is best positioned — is answered with data that vendors themselves help produce. That is a structural conflict the market has largely accepted because the alternative was nothing.
The Procurement Insights archive is built on a different foundation entirely. Eighteen years. 3,300 published documents. No vendor funding. No implementation revenue. No incentive to tell clients what they want to hear on the way to a contract signature.
